The 13th Conference on International Exchange of Professionals - Shenzhen Forum Held Successfully
TIME:2023-03-12

"In the fierce international competition, only innovators will advance, only innovators will grow, and only innovators win." On April 18th, the 13th Conference on International Exchange of Professionals and Shenzhen Forum, jointly sponsored by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs (SAFEA) and the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government and undertaken by the Shenzhen General Chamber of Commerce (SZGCC), was held grandly at Shenzhen Convention & Exhibition Center. The event gathered over 2,000 government officials, well-known entrepreneurs, and scholars from all over the world in Shenzhen, where innovative ideas and forward-looking viewpoints will collide and spark.

In his government work report this year, Premier Li Keqiang mentioned the neologism "maker" for the first time. Due to the urgent need for transformation and upgrade of the Chinese economic structure, "makers" with a deep-rooted innovative spirit, unfettered thinking, courage to take risks and persistence in exploration can be considered to have grasped the pulse of the times.

In May 2014, when General Secretary Xi Jinping held a symposium with foreign experts in Shanghai, he emphasized: "A large river will take shape only when it receives water from small streams. The opening up of a country to the outside world must start with the exchange of people, especially talents. In the fierce international competition, only innovators will advance, only innovators will grow, and only innovators win." General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out that strengthening international talent exchanges and cooperation will not only enable us to learn from the outstanding achievements of civilizations around the world, but also help promote the creative transformation and innovative development of Chinese civilization.

At the 2014 World Economic Forum (Davos), Premier Li Keqiang proposed to set off a new wave of "mass entrepreneurship" and "grassroots entrepreneurship" across the country, forming a new trend of "innovation by all". Talents, entrepreneurship, and innovation have become important elements in the national strategy, and will provide a strong impetus for the transformation of China's economic development mode and urban development and upgrading under the "new normal".

This forum will focus on the theme of "Innovation of Makers, Big Data and Urban Development". Based on General Secretary Xi Jinping's exposition on talents, the mayors of three representative cities in China, namely Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Guiyang, were invited to discuss the relationship between entrepreneurship, innovation and talent and the growth and development of Chinese cities with Chinese and foreign guests, and study and learn from the experience and lessons in the development of advanced cities in the world. Then, China can launch initiatives to gather talents, strengthen the construction of talent innovation, and intensify the construction of platforms for entrepreneurship and innovation of high-level talents, and enhance the capacity to absorb high-level talents.

Makers and Urban Development

On January 6 this year, as Premier Li Keqiang visited Shenzhen Chaihuo Makers Space, "Makers" entered the public eye, and "Maker" became another new signature of innovation and entrepreneurship in Shenzhen. On March 9, 2014, Shenzhen was selected as one of the top ten cities in China for attracting talents for the fifth consecutive year. This list, which was completely finalized by foreign talents, once received the attention and affirmation of General Secretary Xi Jinping.

In the first part of the forum, Xu Qin, Mayor of Shenzhen, O'Neill, Executive Director of International City/County Management Association, and Gao Yunfeng, Chairman of Han's Laser, discussed the topic: "Makers and Urban Development".

Shenzhen, which has always been a city that "dares to take the lead", also "loves innovation" now. Shenzhen's development is driven by technological innovation, and this has set up a unique "Shenzhen model" in China. Shenzhen boasts powerful industrial supporting capacity, a very characteristic innovation culture, and countless active young people, entrepreneurs, innovators, research institutions, universities and enterprises. Therefore, an ideal innovation atmosphere can be formed to provide a good innovation environment for these makers.

According to the guests, with the development of the Internet industry and the emergence of concepts such as e-commerce, mobile Internet, Internet of Things, and big data, successful entrepreneurs such as Jack Ma, Robin Li, and Pony Ma came to the fore. In this era, more "makers" are needed to inject new vitality into the veins of urban economy.

Innovation and Urban Development

In September 2014, Alibaba listed its shares on the New York Stock Exchange, and Jack Ma became a banner for global innovators. Hangzhou, the city that has given Jack Ma the most support in terms of talent, capital, platform and dreams, has become increasingly charming. In 2014, Hangzhou was honored as one of the top ten cities in China for attracting talents for five consecutive years.

In the second part of the forum, Zhang Hongming, Mayor of Hangzhou, Municipalities, Chairman of the SZGCC, and Alibaba executives exchanged ideas on the theme "Innovation and Urban Development".

As we all know, Jack Ma and Alibaba have created new business models and business miracles in China, and he is the well-deserved No. 1 among Chinese innovative entrepreneurs. And in Hangzhou, the city of innovation known as "Silicon Valley in Paradise", legends of innovation and entrepreneurship emerge one after another every day.

An enterprise needs innovation, an industry needs innovation, and a city also needs innovation. Only innovation can lead to high efficiency and better development. Innovative urban management can optimize the allocation of a city’s resources, expand its functional space, reduce its operating costs, enhance the aggregation of its resource elements and the radiation of its functions, and promote the sustainable development of the city. Urban management is an intangible resource that is fundamental, strategic, relevant, and influential. Constantly innovating the concept, system, mechanism, model, and means of urban management can make up for the lack of physical space and physical resources in the city, and improve the allocation efficiency and reduce the allocation cost of physical space and physical resources.

Big Data and Urban Development

With the deepening of global economic integration, the generation of big data has become an inevitable trend. "Big data", due to its the processing capability, will replace the conventional data processing mode of data centers, and can take the most effective way to capture, manage, process, and organize information to help companies make business decisions within a reasonable time.

In the third part of the forum, Chen Gang, Secretary of the Guiyang Municipal Party Committee, William, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and Global Chairman of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Mike Ruttan, Mayor of Port Alberni, Canada, and Wang Jian, Chairman of BGI, exchanged views on "Big Data and Urban Development".

Big Data is gradually changing the mode of urban entrepreneurship and innovation and shifting the direction of urban development. Guizhou must be involved if we talk about big data. The Internet has made Guizhou a place of infinite imagination. Jack Ma once said: "If you missed the investment opportunities in Guangdong and Zhejiang thirty years ago, please do not miss Guizhou today."

According to the tracking results, the amount of global data doubles approximately every two years, which means that the amount of data generated by humans in the past two years is equivalent to the entire amount of data generated before. In the future, enterprises need to pay more attention to and effectively control the negative effects brought by huge data volume in their development. In such a context, Guizhou follows, recognizes, and makes use of the general trend, and provides enterprises an opportunity to become the industry leader in the era of "big data".

Enterprise and Talent Growth

Innovation is a process of exploring the unknown and blazing new trails in the known world. Innovators may encounter various resistances, risks, and difficulties that may result in setbacks and even failures. Therefore, every step forward of innovative talents requires extraordinary courage and perseverance. To achieve the set goals, they must always strive and persevere without being discouraged obstacles and slanders, never retreat when encountering setbacks and setbacks, sacrifice personal interests without regrets, and never give up or give in easily.
